Keeping Players Safe

Last updated: August 26, 2026

This page is part of our Terms of Service. It sets out how we protect players from content that could harm them, what you can do yourself, and, just as important, what we do not do.

1. Who this game is for

Genesis Remastered is written for adults. Player killing is permitted, the game assumes a great deal of reading, and the world was not built with children in mind. Nothing about it is aimed at a young audience: there are no pictures, no videos, no feed recommending things to you, and nothing to buy.

We do not ask your date of birth and we never see a document. That is a deliberate choice about your privacy, and it has a consequence we are open about: we cannot tell how old you are, so we treat every account as a young one until adulthood has actually been established.

2. What is switched on until you establish that you are an adult

Three things are on for every account by default. They stay on until your account carries proof of adulthood that the region you connect from accepts.

The language filter. Coarse language is masked in everything said to you.

Intimate content. Anything the game describes as intimate is blocked outright.

Links. A web address another player types is removed before it reaches you and replaced with (link). You are not shown it and you cannot click it.

How adulthood is established depends on where you connect from. Countries do not agree on what counts, and the rules keep moving. In some places your own word settles it. In others it does not, and it takes a check carried out by another service that we are told the result of. In some there is no method we are able to accept at all, and the adult content stays switched off however old you are.

We deliberately do not list the methods country by country on this page. Any list we published would be out of date before long, and a stale one is worse than none.

The game will tell you one thing, and only one thing: whether your own word is enough where you are connecting from. Try to switch one of these settings off and it either asks you outright, or says that your word is not enough there. It does not tell you what would be enough. To find that out, ask us: use the contact page and say which country you connect from, or mail aop in the game. You do not need an account to ask, and you do not have to tell us your age.

Being established once is not permanent. Whether a check still counts is worked out every time you connect, against the rules of the country you are connecting from at that moment. Connect from somewhere else, or stay put while that country changes its rules and a method we used to accept stops being good enough, and these three settings simply switch back on. Nothing is taken away from your account: the check you passed is still recorded, it just does not count where you now are.

We record which check was passed, who recorded it, when, and a reference from the service that carried it out. No date of birth, image or document ever reaches us. The Privacy Policy explains what we keep.

3. What you can do about another player

Mute them. Type mute <name> in the game. You will not see anything they say, and they cannot contact you. You can mute up to 100 people, and unmute undoes it.

Two things about muting are worth knowing, because they are there to stop it being used against you:

Report them. Type report <name> in the game. The surrounding conversation is attached to the report automatically, so you do not have to save anything, take a screenshot, or remember exactly what was said. Reports go to our administration team, who are people, not software.

If either person involved has not established adulthood, the report is marked priority and looked at ahead of the queue. The same applies when someone has had to mute another player. You do not have to ask for this and you do not have to say how old you are. It happens on its own.

You can also write to us through the contact page. You do not need a character or a forum account to do that.

4. If you are struggling

We are a game run by volunteers. We are not trained for this and we are not a support service, so we would rather point you at people who are than pretend otherwise.

Samaritans: call 116 123, free, any time of day or night, from the UK or Ireland.

Childline: call 0800 1111, free and confidential, if you are under 19 and in the UK.

Anywhere else: findahelpline.com lists free helplines by country.

If someone in the game is talking about hurting themselves, you can report them and we will look, but please do not let that be the only thing you do. A helpline will do more for them tonight than we can.

5. Complaining, and appealing a decision

If we get something wrong, whether a report we did not act on, a sanction you think is unfair, or anything on this page that is not true in practice, tell us through the contact page. You do not need an account to do it.

What happens then:

If you are appealing a sanction, say what happened and why you think it was wrong. You do not need to quote rules at us. Sanctions can be reduced, lifted, or left in place, and we will tell you which and why.

We would rather hear a complaint than have you leave quietly.

6. What we do not do

We would rather tell you this plainly than let you assume otherwise.

7. If somebody moves the conversation somewhere else

Be careful of this one. Everything on this page, from mute and block to the evidence that comes with a report, stops at the edge of Genesis Remastered. If you carry on talking to someone on Discord, or anywhere else, none of it reaches you there and neither do we.

An adult who wants something from a young player very often starts by moving the conversation somewhere quieter. You never have to go. Nothing in the game requires it, and saying no costs you nothing.

8. For parents

If you would rather your child were not playing, write to us through the contact page and we will remove the account. You do not need an account of your own, you do not need to know their character name if you can tell us enough to find it, and you do not have to explain yourself.

That page is also the right place to raise anything about a child's safety here, whether or not you play. It goes to the same people, and we reply within one month, and sooner where a child is involved.

9. Where this reaches, and where it does not

Everything above describes the game itself, however you reach it: in the browser client here, through the desktop build, or with a MUD client of your own.

The forums are a separate piece of software with its own accounts and its own moderators. The link handling described in section 2 does not apply there: posts can carry working links, and they are dealt with by people rather than by a filter. Moderators remove links that break the rules, and you can report a post to them the same way you report anything else. Our rules apply there in full.

Our Discord server is run by Discord, not by us. It has its own reporting tools, and you should use them.

10. Telling us this page is wrong

If something here does not match what you actually experience in the game, we want to know, because one of the two is a bug. Use the contact page.
